Los Angeles, Jun 28: Fans of The Social Network are in for a major update as Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin is officially bringing a sequel to the big screen. According to Variety, Sorkin has not only penned the script but will also direct the film, which is currently in development.
The sequel will be based on The Facebook Files — a 2021 investigative series by The Wall Street Journal that delves into the internal controversies surrounding Facebook. While the original 2010 film, directed by David Fincher, was adapted from Ben Mezrich’s book The Accidental Billionaires, this new installment will focus on recent events and allegations against the tech giant.
Casting has not yet been confirmed, and it remains unclear whether Jesse Eisenberg will reprise his role as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. The project is being produced by Todd Black, Peter Rice, Stuart Besser, and Sorkin himself.
The first film earned over $226 million globally and bagged three Academy Awards, including Best Adapted Screenplay for Sorkin. Speaking about the sequel, Sorkin has said the recent trajectory of Facebook — including issues of algorithm manipulation and user engagement — is “a story very much worth telling.”
This marks another major screenplay effort for Sorkin, also known for Moneyball, Molly’s Game, and The Trial of the Chicago 7.
