Rahul Gandhi's image on sanitary pads sparks political row in Bihar

Patna, Jul 4: A new Congress initiative in Bihar to distribute free sanitary pads featuring Rahul Gandhi’s image has triggered sharp political reactions, with rival parties slamming it as an electoral stunt.

The pads are part of the Congress’ Priyadarshini Udaan Yojana, launched to promote menstrual hygiene and awareness among women across Bihar. Bihar Congress chief Rajesh Kumar, unveiling the packets on Friday, said, “This is linked to our promise of providing Rs 2,500 monthly under the Mai Bahin Samman Yojana. We aim to provide free sanitary napkins to women across rural and urban areas.”

Over five lakh sanitary pad boxes are set to be distributed under the scheme, which also features images of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra alongside Rahul Gandhi.

The campaign, however, drew sharp criticism from JD(U) and BJP. “What has happened to Congress? Women are a symbol of dignity, not a tool for your campaign. This is sheer arrogance,” said JD(U) spokesperson Neeraj Kumar. He accused Congress of "ideological bankruptcy" and blamed the party’s alliance with RJD for such controversial moves.

BJP’s Kuntal Krishna echoed the criticism, saying, “Congress is worried about its poll performance. This reflects the culture of sycophancy in the party. Rahul Gandhi has no sense of propriety, and now the party follows suit.”

Congress leader Alka Lamba defended the move, stating, “The real issue is not Rahul Gandhi’s photo, but the harsh reality that women in Bihar are still forced to use cloth during menstruation. The BJP has always had an anti-women stance.”

Bihar is expected to go to the polls later this year, and the issue has added a fresh spark to the ongoing political battle.
