MNS workers vandalise businessman’s office after his refusal to learn Marathi

Mumbai, Jul 5: Workers of the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) vandalised the Mumbai office of businessman Sushil Kedia on Friday, days after he publicly vowed not to learn Marathi.

The incident, caught on camera, shows five to six MNS supporters hurling objects—believed to be bricks—from blue plastic bags at Kedia’s office. A security guard attempted to intervene, but the attackers continued until the bags were emptied.

Kedia had earlier tagged Raj Thackeray on X (formerly Twitter), stating that he had lived in Mumbai for over 30 years but would not learn Marathi as a form of protest. "With your gross misconduct, I have made it a resolve that until such people as you are allowed to pretend to be taking care of Marathi Manus, I take pratigya I won't learn Marathi," he wrote on July 3.

Reacting to the attack, Kedia once again posted on X, saying that such threats and violence won’t make him fluent in the language. He emphasised that it is love, not fear, that fosters cultural assimilation.

He also expressed concern that the hostile environment only deepens his fear of making mistakes while speaking Marathi, possibly triggering more aggression.
