Hyderabad, Jul 19: Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday announced that the country’s first domestically manufactured semiconductor chip is set to be released this year, marking a major milestone in India’s tech sector.
Speaking at the 85th foundation day celebration of Keshav Memorial Educational Society, Vaishnaw said India is emerging as a key global player in the semiconductor space. “Today, some of the most complex chips are being designed in cities like Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Pune, Gurugram and Chennai. Now, we are beginning chip manufacturing,” he said.
He revealed that construction is underway for six approved semiconductor plants, with the first 'Made in India' chip expected in 2025.
As part of the India AI Mission, the government is making free datasets available and training one million people in AI technology, he said. Highlighting the shift in global dynamics, Vaishnaw said the eastern hemisphere is set to lead the world economy, adding that India would be among the top two global economies by 2047.
