‘Nepo-Kids’ in Mollywood: How star sons like Prithviraj and Dulquer carved their own identity

Kochi, Jul 20: The glitz and glamour of the film industry often mask the complex realities faced by aspiring actors—be it outsiders or star kids. In Mollywood, where legacy looms large, many children of legendary actors have faced intense public scrutiny. However, what sets them apart is their determination to create their own identity—beyond surnames and stardom.

In a candid revelation during an interaction with Mashable India, popular Malayalam actor Prithviraj Sukumaran openly embraced the ‘nepo-kid’ tag. “I got my first break in ‘Nandanam’ because of my father,” he admitted. The actor, who is now known for delivering critically acclaimed performances and taking bold directorial steps, added that fellow actor Dulquer Salmaan too belongs to the same category.

Despite having the backing of superstar parents, these young actors have faced their own trials on the way to stardom.

Son of renowned filmmaker Fazil, Fahadh Faasil’s debut in Kaiyethum Doorath (2002) was both written and directed by his father. But the film tanked, and the criticism was severe. The harsh reception kept him away from films for nearly seven years. When he returned, it wasn’t with fanfare but with a quiet yet powerful role in an anthology film in 2009. Today, Fahadh is celebrated as one of the finest actors in Indian cinema.

Though Prithviraj’s entry into films was facilitated by his father Sukumaran’s fame, the road ahead wasn’t easy. From being criticised for his dialogue delivery to being labelled arrogant, he was not spared by the media or fans. But years of consistent performances and ventures into direction have made him one of the most respected names in the industry.

Being the son of Mammootty, one of Indian cinema’s greatest actors, is no easy feat. Dulquer Salmaan has constantly been measured against his father’s towering legacy. However, the actor carved a niche with his choice of unique, youth-centric roles and pan-India films. His appeal across multiple industries today is proof of his independent success.

Another name often brought into the ‘nepotism’ conversation is Pranav Mohanlal. The actor, who made his full-fledged debut with Aadhi, has maintained a low profile despite the limelight. While the expectations are sky-high, the young actor is yet to truly establish his footing—though he enjoys a loyal fanbase.

In contrast to the often toxic discourse around nepotism in Bollywood, the Malayalam industry has shown a more balanced approach. Talent, not pedigree, ultimately determines an actor’s fate in Mollywood. As fans continue to observe the rise of these star kids, what becomes clear is that while their start might be privileged, their journey remains as demanding as any.

Prithviraj’s self-awareness and candid admission not only reflect humility but also a broader understanding of the evolving dynamics in the film industry—where legacy may open the door, but only talent can keep it open.
