Satara, Jul 22: In a shocking daylight incident, an 18-year-old youth held a Class 10 girl at knifepoint in a residential locality of Satara city on Monday afternoon, triggering panic among residents. Swift action by alert locals and police personnel averted a tragedy and ensured the girl’s safe rescue.
The incident occurred around 4 pm as the girl was returning home from school. The youth, reportedly a jilted lover from the same neighbourhood, intercepted her and held a knife to her throat. The scene, which unfolded in full public view, was captured on video and shared widely.
Onlookers promptly alerted constable Sagar Nikam of the City Police Station's intelligence wing. Nikam, along with constable Dheeraj More, rushed to the spot. Despite repeated pleas from police and locals for over ten minutes, the youth refused to release the girl.
Displaying remarkable presence of mind, one constable distracted the accused from the front while the other crept up from behind. At the opportune moment, the knife-wielding hand was seized and the girl was swiftly pulled to safety.
Soon after, an enraged crowd began to assault the youth, forcing police to intervene and shield him. The attacker was then taken into custody and escorted to the Shahupuri Police Station.
Inspector Sachin Mhetre was informed, and both the accused and the girl were taken to the district hospital for medical checks. A formal complaint was registered later in the evening.
Preliminary reports suggest the motive was the girl's rejection of the youth's advances. Police have confirmed that both reside in the same area, and further investigations are underway.
