Washington, Jul 24: In a revelation that has reignited controversy around the 2016 US presidential election, a newly declassified intelligence report suggests that Russian authorities allegedly possessed compromising information on Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton’s health and mental state during the heated campaign against Donald Trump.
According to the report—part of a 2020 House Intelligence Committee review—the Russian government was aware of Clinton's alleged “psycho-emotional issues” and that she was being treated with “heavy tranquilisers,” a fact that reportedly caused serious concern within the Barack Obama administration and among top Democratic leaders at the time.
The document, made public by Tulsi Gabbard, Director of National Intelligence, indicates that Russian President Vladimir Putin knew of Clinton's reported bouts of “uncontrolled fits of anger, aggression, and cheerfulness.” However, believing that Clinton would likely win the election, the Kremlin allegedly opted not to release the damaging material before November 2016.
Instead, as the report outlines, Moscow had considered using the intelligence post-election to weaken a potential Clinton presidency.
In addition to mental health concerns, the report claims that Clinton, now 77, was battling multiple health conditions including Type 2 diabetes, ischemic heart disease, deep vein thrombosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It also suggests that her health records were kept under “strictest secrecy,” with even some close advisors allegedly kept out of the loop.
A striking detail from the declassified findings also claims the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service had access to a Democratic campaign email allegedly outlining a strategy—approved by Clinton herself—to link Donald Trump to Russian hackers in a bid to divert public attention from the controversy surrounding her private email server.
Fox News reported that some sections of the intelligence further claim that then-President Obama and senior Democratic Party leaders were “extraordinarily alarmed” about Clinton’s medical state, fearing it could negatively impact her election chances. Clinton eventually lost the election to Donald Trump, who assumed office in January 2017.
While the Clinton camp has not issued an immediate response to the newly revealed report, the disclosures are likely to stir fresh debate in political circles and media platforms across the United States and beyond.
