Continuous rains disrupt traditional boat fishing in Udupi

Udupi, Jul 24: Persistent rainfall over the past several days has severely impacted the livelihoods of traditional boat fishermen in the Udupi district.

Earlier this July, with rainfall showing signs of easing, traditional boat fishermen in Malpe ventured into the sea for a few days. However, with worsening weather conditions, the boats have now been docked again.

According to Malpe fishermen, they initially caught large quantities of sigadi (a type of fish) during their early ventures. While there is still a good chance of catching sigadi now, rough sea conditions are making it unsafe to venture out.

In the Byndoor region, traditional boat fishing had resumed in mid-July, but fishermen there have also faced setbacks from the beginning.

Last year too, repeated cyclonic conditions during the month of July had prevented traditional boats from going to sea, resulting in heavy losses for fishermen.
