Bantwal: Water level rises in Nethravathi river; arecanut plantations inundated

Daijiworld Media Network - Bantwal

Bantwal, July 27: Due to heavy rainfall in the Western Ghats, the water level in the Nethravathi River has significantly increased, leading to the flooding of several arecanut plantations in Sarapady and Maninalkuru villages along the river basin. Low-lying areas in these regions have also been submerged.

Since July 26, a heavy flow of water has been recorded in the river. On Sunday morning, July 27, the water level at Bantwal measured 7.4 metres.

Although the danger level in the region is set at 8 metres, the situation currently remains under control.

Strong winds accompanying the rains have caused trees to fall on several houses, leading to property damage in various areas.

Exactly 51 years ago, in July 1970 the entire Bantwal and surrounding areas were deep in water; after so many decades, the condition would be worse, if it were to rain like that day, due to rampant unplanned urbanization & concreting! Incidentally; Mumbai saw it's worst ever flooding on 26th July 2005 when a cloudburst (995 mm rainfall in 24 hours ) brought the city to a complete standstill for nearly 48 hours!

When looking at your comment, I remembered one more story related to bantwal floods. My grand nanny used to say when putting us to sleep...I will write in short. During these floods there were coconuts floating all over. One naitho most probably from ponbur (ponburchya naithyank eklyanki dash dash na munthat pole thoss !) came to bantwal/farangi pete side during these floods, and collected all the coconuts it seems. Later he sold them. He built a terrace house from the money he sold the coconuts. That's why now also there's a saying byari munchi yepala khaaara. Farangi pete is safe. We kept boats/parachutes safe...
