Vientiane, Jul 28: As heavy rains continue to sweep across Laos, health officials are urging residents to remain vigilant against dengue fever, especially during the ongoing rainy season, when the risk of outbreaks typically rises.
Despite a notable drop in reported cases, authorities caution that standing water from continuous rainfall creates ideal mosquito breeding conditions, increasing the threat of dengue transmission.
In response, local governments and community members across several villages have launched collective clean-up campaigns aimed at eliminating potential breeding sites for mosquitoes.
In Vientiane, the capital city that has reported the highest number of infections this year, residents like Mithouna are taking action.
“My neighbours and I clean our homes and surroundings at least once a week,” she told Xinhua. “Dengue is a community issue—it doesn’t just affect one family.”
Another resident, Chanxay, echoed the concern, noting the added risk posed to children, many of whom are home on summer break.
“Water is collecting everywhere, and our children are more exposed now. As parents, we need to be especially cautious during this time,” she said.
According to the Ministry of Health, Laos recorded 4,308 dengue cases as of July 21, including one fatality. Vientiane alone accounted for 2,052 cases, highlighting the city as a hotspot for dengue activity.
To curb the spread, health officials recommend five key dengue control measures:
1. Seal unused containers to prevent water accumulation.
2. Empty and clean water vessels regularly.
3. Introduce guppy fish into standing water to eat mosquito larvae.
4. Maintain household and community cleanliness.
5. Perform these tasks weekly to ensure consistent prevention.
Authorities continue to encourage active public participation, stressing that community responsibility is vital to keeping dengue outbreaks in check during the rainy season.
