Bareilly, Aug 1: In a shocking case of betrayal and murder, a man in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly allegedly killed his wife at the insistence of his lover and attempted to mislead police by staging a fake highway robbery.
The accused, Om Saran (38), a resident of Badaun district, has been arrested and sent to judicial custody, officials confirmed. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (Bareilly), Anurag Arya, inconsistencies in Saran’s statement and his frequent calls to a woman named Mannat raised suspicions, leading to a deeper probe that uncovered the murder conspiracy.

Saran had initially claimed that on the night of July 31, he and his wife, Amarvati, were attacked near Kanthari village by unidentified assailants who looted jewellery and cash before fatally assaulting his wife. He lodged a written complaint, following which an FIR was registered.
However, during investigation, Saran confessed that he had secretly married Mannat, who pressured him to eliminate his wife. As part of the plan, he took Amarvati on a trip to Purnagiri and, on their return, borrowed a motorcycle and a sharp-edged weapon (‘banka’) from his brother-in-law in Motipur.
At around 12:15 am near a deserted stretch in Kanthari, he brutally attacked Amarvati, killing her on the spot. To make it appear like a robbery, he removed her mangalsutra, earrings, and Rs 10,000, hiding them in nearby bushes. He then called his brother-in-law and a friend, pretending to rush her for treatment in an ambulance.
ASP (South) Anshika Verma said the hidden jewellery, cash, murder weapon, and a mobile phone were later recovered. Saran has been booked under sections 103, 230, 238, and 240 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police are now probing the involvement of Mannat in the conspiracy.
