Mangaluru/Udupi, Aug 4: A total of 37 schools from Dakshina Kannada (DK) and Udupi districts have been selected under the PM Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme, a central government initiative aimed at upgrading government schools with special funding. Across Karnataka, 665 schools have been chosen under this scheme.

As part of the National Education Policy, the central government will provide funding ranging from Rs 10 to 15 lakhs per school over the next five years to carry out various developmental activities. The school selection process took place in six phases during the academic years 2023-24 and 2024-25.

Through the PM SHRI app, schools across districts were required to upload online data related to infrastructure, educational and administrative parameters. In Dakshina Kannada, over 230 schools and in Udupi, 165 schools uploaded their information. However, only 23 from Dakshina Kannada and 14 schools from Udupi were finally selected.

The selection process began in 2023-24 with the first phase, followed by the 2nd to 6th phases in 2024-25. Initially, schools uploaded all positive aspects including student numbers. These submissions were reviewed at the district level and forwarded to the state government, which conducted another level of scrutiny before sending the final list to the central government. After thorough evaluation by the centre, only those schools that scored over 70 marks based on the given criteria were selected.

Under the PM SHRI scheme, the salaries of pre-primary teachers and support staff (ayahs) in the selected schools will be covered by the central government. Students will receive Rs 500 per year for field visits. Funding will also be allocated for eco-club activities (last year, Rs 25,000 was provided per school). Over the next five years, the schools will receive special grants aimed at their holistic development.
