New Delhi, Aug 13: India has taken a major step towards hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) formally approving the country’s bid during its Special General Meeting (SGM).
The government will bear the entire cost of staging the event, with Ahmedabad proposed as the host city. The final bid documents must be submitted before the August 31 deadline. India had earlier submitted an Expression of Interest for the Games, naming Ahmedabad as the venue.
With Canada having withdrawn from the race, India’s chances of securing the 2030 CWG have received a significant boost.
A team from Commonwealth Sport, led by Director of Games Darren Hall, recently visited Ahmedabad to inspect proposed venues and meet Gujarat government officials. A larger delegation is expected to visit later this month.
The final decision on the host nation will be taken at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow in the last week of November.
India previously hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010 in New Delhi.
