Udine, Aug 14: In a dramatic season opener, European champions Paris Saint-Germain scripted a remarkable late comeback to edge past Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 on penalties, lifting the UEFA Super Cup for the first time in the club’s history on Wednesday.

The Stadio Friuli witnessed high drama as Spurs, under new coach Thomas Frank, looked poised for glory with a 2-0 lead by the 48th minute. Micky van de Ven struck in the 39th minute, followed by Cristian Romero’s header soon after the restart.

However, PSG substitutes turned the tide. Lee Kang-in pulled one back in the 85th minute before Goncalo Ramos rose high to head home the equaliser deep into stoppage time, forcing the match into a tense penalty shootout.

The shootout began on a shaky note for PSG with Vitinha missing the first spot kick, but goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier – making his debut – emerged as the hero, denying Van de Ven. Mathys Tel’s miss further dented Spurs’ chances, paving the way for Nuno Mendes to slot in the decisive penalty.

For PSG, Ramos, Ousmane Dembele and Lee found the net from the spot, while Spurs converted through Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur and Pedro Porro in vain.

Captain Marquinhos hailed the team’s mental strength, saying, “We didn’t have much preparation, but football is as much about mentality as it is about physicality. They sat back after going 2-0 up, and that’s dangerous against PSG.”

The victory marked PSG’s fifth trophy of 2025, coming just a month after their FIFA Club World Cup final loss to Chelsea. Spurs, meanwhile, will look to regroup quickly ahead of their Premier League opener against Burnley on Saturday.
