Dozens arrested as Trump orders federal takeover of Washington police

Washington, Aug 15: In an unprecedented move, U.S. President Donald Trump has taken control of Washington’s police department and ordered the deployment of the National Guard for at least a month. The White House confirmed that more than 1,650 local and federal law enforcement officers are now on round-the-clock duty across the capital.

On Wednesday night alone, 45 people were arrested — including 29 undocumented immigrants — as part of the intensified security operation. While National Guard troops have been tasked with assisting law enforcement, the Pentagon clarified they do not have powers of arrest.

The sweeping federal action also involves clearing homeless encampments and relocating residents, though specific details remain unclear. Armed federal agents, alongside city police, were seen patrolling Union Station, the National Mall, and other key locations.

Mayor Muriel Bowser called the takeover “unsettling and unprecedented” but stopped short of open confrontation, saying the additional resources could benefit the city despite concerns over federal overreach.

Trump defended the move as an effort to curb crime, even as city officials noted that crime rates were already on the decline. Under Washington’s federal district status, the president is permitted to assume control of its police for up to 30 days without Congressional approval.
