Nassau, Aug 17: Tragedy struck Carnival Cruise Line’s newly launched Celebration Key resort on Grand Bahama Island, when two American passengers drowned in separate incidents within hours of each other on August 15.

According to reports, a 79-year-old man became unresponsive while snorkelling at the resort’s beach around noon. Lifeguards rushed to his aid and performed CPR, but despite efforts, he was declared dead by a medical doctor shortly after.

In a second incident the same afternoon, at around 2:30 pm, a 74-year-old woman from another cruise ship was found unresponsive in one of the resort’s freshwater lagoons. CPR was administered but could not revive her, police confirmed.

Authorities said the victims were passengers from two different cruise ships – the Mardi Gras, which departed from Port Canaveral, Florida, and the Carnival Elation, which sailed from Jacksonville, Florida. The Royal Bahamas Police Force has launched investigations, with autopsies pending to ascertain the causes of death.

Carnival Cruise Line, in a statement, expressed condolences, stating: “Our lifeguards and medical team responded to two separate water emergency incidents at Celebration Key on Friday — one in the lagoon and one at the beach. Sadly, both guests have passed away. Our Care Team is providing assistance to the families.”

Celebration Key, which opened on July 19 with an investment of $600 million, is marketed as a luxury destination featuring the world’s largest freshwater lagoon, Starfish Lagoon, and an 11,000 sq ft infinity pool at Pearl Cove Beach Club. It also offers a wide array of recreational and dining experiences.
