Gary Neville urges Manchester United to sign experienced goalkeeper after Bayindir error

New Delhi, Aug 18: Former Manchester United defender and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has raised serious concerns over the club’s goalkeeping situation following a costly mistake by Altay Bayindir in United's season opener. Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, the ex-Red Devils captain emphasized the urgent need for a commanding, experienced No. 1, warning that the current setup lacks the stability needed to challenge at the highest level.

“There’s a glaring issue that Manchester United cannot ignore—it’s the goalkeeping position,” Neville stated bluntly. “They must find a dominant goalkeeper. I’m unequivocal on that.”

Neville drew from his two-decade-long experience at the club, pointing to the periods of consistency under Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar as crucial to United’s success, compared to the instability in the years in between.

“Between Schmeichel and Van der Sar, we had seven or eight goalkeepers over several years. It was unsettling. A top keeper wins you points—by commanding the box, making key saves when defenders slip up. Right now, United don’t have that.”

Bayindir Under Fire After Costly Blunder

Bayindir, who started against Arsenal at Old Trafford, committed a critical first-half error that gifted the Gunners a goal, overshadowing what was otherwise a strong team performance. United’s new signings, Bryan Mbuemo and Matheus Cunha, impressed fans, but Bayindir’s mistake left many questioning his readiness to be the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Donnarumma and Martinez on Neville’s Radar

Neville didn’t just criticize—he offered solutions. Citing Gianluigi Donnarumma and Emiliano Martinez as ideal candidates, he stressed that their experience in high-pressure scenarios would be invaluable to a club like United.

“It’s not just about being technically good. These are big characters. Donnarumma was immense in the Euros final. Martinez won Argentina the World Cup.

These are players who thrive under pressure.”

With both goalkeepers reportedly available this summer and PSR (Profit and Sustainability Rules) potentially limiting United's spending, Neville acknowledged that a loan deal or creative financing may be required.

“I don’t know where United are on PSR, but they may need to pull a rabbit out of the hat financially. If they want to stabilize their back line and stop dropping points from individual errors, this is the move they have to make—fast.”

The Bigger Picture

Neville’s comments come at a time when United are undergoing significant tactical and personnel changes under Ruben Amorim. While the team showed signs of progress against Arsenal, the ongoing uncertainty between the posts could derail momentum unless addressed swiftly.

With less than two weeks left in the transfer window, pressure is mounting on United’s board to act decisively and bring in a seasoned shot-stopper who can handle the expectations at Old Trafford.
