Muscat, Aug 21: Oman is set to script history this October as it hosts the first-ever Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Trophy (AREST), a landmark international rugby event bringing together 20 national teams, both men and women, from across Asia.
The three-day tournament, scheduled from October 24–26, 2025, will take place at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex (Bausher) and the ROP Stadium in Muscat. This is the first time Oman will host an Asia Rugby-sanctioned international event, firmly placing the Sultanate on the regional rugby map.
The announcement was made at a press conference held at the Oman Olympic Committee Headquarters, Al Ghubra, on August 20.

Speaking at the launch, Nabil Al Busaidi, Chairman of Oman Rugby, hailed the event as a breakthrough:
“This tournament reflects years of dedication to developing rugby in Oman. It will showcase our talent and elevate Oman’s standing in Asian rugby.”
Brian Hopkins, Head Coach of the Oman National Sevens Team, described the tournament as a catalyst for growth:
“Rugby Sevens is fast-paced and thrilling. Hosting this event will inspire the next generation of Omani players and engage the community in an unforgettable sporting spectacle.”
To promote the event, Oman Rugby also announced the Kempinski Open Night, an interactive promotional evening where fans can meet the national squad, explore sponsorship opportunities, and experience Rugby Sevens first-hand.
Teams and Tournament Format
The Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Trophy will feature:
• 12 Men’s Teams: Oman (host), Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria.
• 4 Women’s Teams: Uzbekistan, Iran, Syria, Lebanon.

The tournament will run on October 25–26 with group stages and knockout rounds, promising high-octane rugby action.
Oman Team Preparations
Over 50 local players are already undergoing intensive training under the guidance of Brian Hopkins (Head Coach), Ali al Dakhri (Assistant Coach), and Mohammed al Hashami (Team Manager).
Hopkins revealed that the squad is blending rugby drills with judo and wrestling techniques to sharpen tackling and physicality. “We are determined to put up a strong performance. I urge all Omani fans to support us in this historic home event,” he added.
