Editors Guild slams Congress for criminal complaint against journalist

Daijiworld Media Network - New Delhi

New Delhi, Aug 24: The Editors Guild of India (EGI) has voiced strong concern over the Congress party’s move to file a criminal complaint against NDTV journalist Shiv Aroor, calling it a troubling trend that threatens press freedom.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Guild criticised the Congress spokesperson’s remarks indicating a plan to press criminal charges against Aroor, without commenting on the specifics of the broadcast that triggered the complaint.

Highlighting a “creeping tendency” to weaponise criminal law against journalists, the EGI said such actions amount to harassment and urged political parties to seek civil remedies instead. It warned that resorting to criminalisation sets a “dangerous precedent” and undermines the role of a free press in a democracy.

“Political parties must refrain from such steps,” the Guild said. “Multiple civil avenues exist to address grievances. Using criminal charges only serves to stifle free expression.”

While defending journalists, the EGI also reminded the media of its obligation to uphold fairness and balance in reporting. The statement was signed by Guild President Anant Nath, General Secretary Ruben Banerjee, and Treasurer K Ve Prasad.

This controversy comes amid growing alarm over increasing political pressure on the press, as media professionals navigate heightened scrutiny and frequent threats of legal action.
