Cairo, Aug 27: Families in Gaza City continued to leave their homes on Tuesday after a night of intense Israeli bombardment on the city’s outskirts, even as Israel witnessed nationwide protests demanding the release of hostages and an end to the war.
Residents reported heavy aerial and tank shelling in the eastern suburbs of Sabra, Shejaia, and Tuffah, along with Jabalia town to the north. Several roads and houses were destroyed in the overnight strikes. “Earthquakes, we call it. They want to scare people to leave their homes,” said Ismail, a 40-year-old resident of Gaza City.
The Israeli military stated that its forces were operating in the area to locate weapons and destroy tunnels used by militants. Despite mounting protests within Israel and international condemnation, Tel Aviv is preparing for what it calls a final offensive against Hamas in Gaza City.
Meanwhile, an airstrike at Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza on Monday claimed at least 20 lives, including journalists working with Reuters, the Associated Press, and Al Jazeera. Local health officials said a total of 34 people were killed in strikes overnight and on Tuesday, including 18 around Gaza City.
