Dubai, Aug 27: Dubai Municipality has issued strict warnings to several engineering consultancy offices after detecting violations in structural designs of citizens’ villas that resulted in unnecessary escalation of construction costs.
Authorities said the violations were in direct breach of the Dubai Building Code, as the firms added exaggerated structural elements without engineering justification. The Municipality confirmed that these irregularities came to light during ongoing inspections across the emirate.
Eng. Maryam Al Muhairi, CEO of the Buildings Regulation and Permits Agency at Dubai Municipality, stressed that compliance with the Dubai Building Code is both a professional responsibility and a regulatory obligation. “The objective is to strike a balance between quality and reduced costs, ensuring safety while preventing property owners from bearing unjustified expenses,” she said.
Officials further warned that repeat violations would negatively affect the annual evaluation of consultancy offices, with disciplinary actions to follow as per prevailing laws. Earlier this year, the Municipality had suspended two consultancy firms for six months for professional misconduct, barring them from licensing new projects.
The Dubai Building Code, introduced in 2021, serves as a unified framework for the construction sector, consolidating over 60 separate regulations into one system. It is a cornerstone of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, aiming to ensure sustainability, safety and cost efficiency in building practices.
By tightening monitoring and enforcing compliance, Dubai Municipality reiterated its commitment to safeguarding property owners’ interests, regulating the construction sector, and advancing Dubai’s long-term vision for sustainable urban growth.
