New Delhi, Aug 27: A quarrel over repayment of a loan of Rs 40,000 turned tragic in the Baba Haridas Nagar area of Delhi, when two brothers allegedly slapped a 36-year-old man, leading to his death, police said on Wednesday.

The accused, identified as Ranjit Yadav and his brother Ramu Yadav, both residents of Dinpur village in Najafgarh, have been arrested.

According to police, the incident occurred on the evening of August 25, when a PCR call alerted Baba Haridas Nagar police station about the assault. The victim was identified as Ganga Rai, a resident of Baba Haridas Nagar and originally from Samastipur, Bihar.

Investigations revealed that Ranjit and Ramu had lent Rs 40,000 to Rai nearly two years ago. Despite repeated demands, he failed to return the money.

“On Monday evening, the brothers confronted Rai at a construction site where he was overseeing shuttering work. Heated arguments broke out, during which Ranjit allegedly slapped Rai with force. He collapsed immediately, lost consciousness, and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead,” said a police officer.

The body has been sent for post-mortem at Rao Tula Ram Memorial Hospital in Jaffarpur Kalan. Police registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and said further investigation is underway.
