New Delhi, Aug 28: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a two-day official visit to Japan beginning August 29, marking his first standalone visit to Tokyo in nearly seven years. The visit comes at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, briefing the media in New Delhi, said the Prime Minister will leave late tonight and the visit will be “fully dedicated to the bilateral agenda.” This will be Modi’s eighth visit to Japan since 2014, underscoring the depth of the India-Japan partnership. The annual summit, Misri said, represents the “highest level of dialogue mechanism” between the two nations and is key to driving their special strategic and global partnership.

PM Modi and PM Ishiba last met in June 2025 at Kananaskis, Canada, on the sidelines of the G7 Summit. “India and Japan are two countries that share values, trust and a strategic outlook on global issues. They are Asia’s two leading democracies and among the world’s top five economies,” Misri observed.

The leaders are expected to conduct a comprehensive review of bilateral ties in areas including trade and investment, defence and security, and science and technology. The summit will also provide an opportunity to exchange views on regional and global matters. New initiatives to strengthen resilience and respond to emerging challenges are likely to be announced.

The Prime Minister is also scheduled to engage with top business leaders from both nations in a dedicated forum, further deepening economic linkages.

On the strategic front, discussions are expected to cover the Quad grouping, of which both India and Japan are members along with the United States and Australia. With India set to host the next Quad summit later this year, security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific will feature prominently in the talks.

The visit comes against the backdrop of recent US tariff hikes on Indian imports, a move that has strained ties with Washington. Misri confirmed that New Delhi remains engaged in discussions with the US while continuing to expand cooperation with its Quad partners.

The Modi-Ishiba summit is expected to chart the next phase of the India-Japan partnership, reinforcing a relationship built on shared democratic values and strategic trust.
