Arar, Aug 28: Skywatchers in Arar were treated to a rare celestial sight on Tuesday evening as some of the largest sunspots of the year appeared prominently on the surface of the Sun, drawing keen interest from astronomers and enthusiasts alike.
Members of the Space and Astronomy Club confirmed that the activity included spots 4195, 4197 and 4199, each among the most significant recorded in 2025. According to club member Adnan Khalifah, these dark patches are temporary regions formed by intense magnetic activity. Though they appear dimmer, they remain highly radiant and powerful.
Astronomers noted that some of the sunspots measured tens of thousands of kilometers across, with several exceeding the Earth’s size many times over. The phenomenon was visible through telescopes fitted with protective solar filters, allowing both professionals and amateurs to safely track the occurrence.
Experts cautioned that such activity is closely linked with solar flares and geomagnetic storms, which can potentially disrupt satellite navigation systems, power grids, and global communications. They also underlined the importance of monitoring the 11-year solar cycle, which influences the frequency and intensity of these disturbances.
“Public observations and amateur contributions play a vital role, as they not only strengthen monitoring efforts but also create wider awareness and inspire interest in space research,” astronomers added.
