Eric Ozario, champion of Konkani music and cultural heritage, passes away at 76

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Aug 29: Doyen of Konkani music and cultural heritage Eric Alexander Ozario passed away here on Friday, August 29, at the age of 76 years. He had been under treatment for kidney disease and was admitted to Fr Muller Hospital.

Popular as Eric Ozario, he was born on May 18, 1949, in Jeppu, Mangaluru, and rose to become a celebrated Konkani composer, cultural activist, and passionate advocate for the Konkani community. Over decades, he played a pivotal role in preserving and promoting the Konkani language through his creative and organisational efforts.

Ozario founded Mandd Sobhann, a leading cultural organisation dedicated to nurturing Konkani performing arts, and later established Kalaangann, a heritage centre that continues to serve as a hub for learning and conserving Konkani traditions.

One of his landmark achievements was introducing Konkani as an optional subject in schools across Karnataka. His persistent advocacy ensured that the language was formally recognised in education policy, securing its place in classrooms.

Beyond language, Ozario also championed social causes. In 2009, he joined a public protest against tree felling in Mangaluru, demonstrating his deep commitment to ecological and social welfare. His life and achievements were chronicled in the biography The Indefatigable Crusader, published in 2014.

Ozario’s efforts earned him numerous accolades, including the title Konkani Kala Samrat in 1994. He also received Konkani Ratna, the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award in 1993, and the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy Award in 1999. More recently, he was honoured with Lifetime Achievement Awards by DaijiDubai in 2022 and Konkani Natak Sabha in 2023, in addition to international recognition from Konkanis in Tel Aviv.

He is survived by his wife, noted singer Joyce Fontes from Jeppu, two children – Dr Rashmi Kiran and Rithesh Kiran – and his son-in-law, well-known music director Alwyn Fernandes.

Eric Ozario’s life stands as a testament to how unwavering dedication can safeguard cultural identity, inspire generations, and ensure the enduring vitality of Konkani heritage.

There are very few people who take a road which is less travelled and have a journey of a lifetime with unexpected twists and turns and live to tell the stories of the success they had. You were one of them Dear Eric Baab ,You not only took lesser known road but encouraged hundreds of young musicians like me to do the same and build our own world. Today that light of inspiration has become one with this universe which we can only feel in your Songs and a legacy which u have left. Rest in peace Soldier of Konkani you have given everything to a vision you believed in and here onwards that vision will be taken Forward by people. We will miss you Eric Baab forever till we breath Rest in peace

Dear Eric uncle. I was fortunte to have Rithesh and Vishwas Rebimbus as my classmates, while in Aloysius College. It was then, that I started re-listening to Konkani Classics of both you and Wilfy uncle. Through the decades, this has been my mainstay whenever I wanted to dive into konkani music. Both you and Wifly uncle are legends and konkani society is fortunate to have had you both as torchbearers of konkani language and culture. I thank you for the opportunity in the culturally insightful movie " Osmitay" . I had the good fortune of interacting with you personally and it was such a joy. We ( konkans) are forever indebted to your services, for without your guidance and insight, we'd be a barren community/ society. RIP uncle. May your soul find its way to our creator Jesus Christ.

The passing of Bab Eric Ozario is a deep loss to all who love Konkani. To me, he was more than a Konkani activist/singer/organiser/fighter—he was the soul of our language, the voice that carried our heritage with pride. His songs, his spirit, and his tireless fight for Konkani will always remain an inspiration. Ericbab, your music still echoes in our hearts, and your dream for Konkani will live on through all of us. Thank you for showing us what it means to love one’s roots with courage and conviction. You may have left this world, but your spirit will forever sing in the Konkani heart. From - Ancy Paladka
