Sana’a, Sep 1: The Houthi militia has appointed Mohammed Ahmed Muftah as acting Prime Minister following the death of Ahmed al-Rahawi in an Israeli airstrike on the Yemeni capital.

The announcement was made by Houthi President Mahdi Al-Mashat, confirming Muftah’s elevation from First Deputy Prime Minister to head of the group’s government. Analysts say the move signals a shift toward stronger hardline leadership within the movement.

Profile of Mohammed Ahmed Muftah

Born in 1967 in Sana’a’s Al-Haymah district, Muftah is regarded as a key religious and ideological figure in the Houthi ranks. Starting his career as a preacher and teacher in mosques, he became widely known for advocating the group’s strict doctrinal line.

He studied under prominent clerics including Badr al-Din al-Houthi, and played an active role in lectures and youth summer programs aimed at spreading the movement’s ideology.

During the Sa’ada wars, Muftah was arrested for supporting the Houthis. After the group’s takeover of Sana’a, he joined the Supreme Revolutionary Committee and later helped establish the al-Ummah Party, closely aligned with Houthi politics.
