Former US officials remind Trump: "India remains key partner" amid tariff tensions

Daijiworld Media Network - Washington

Washington, Sep 5: Former US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and former Deputy Secretary Kurt M Campbell have urged President Donald Trump to remember the strategic importance of India, even as trade ties hit turbulence following steep tariffs on Indian imports.

Writing in Foreign Affairs, the former officials stressed that the India-US partnership has bipartisan backing and has effectively countered Chinese adventurism in the Indo-Pacific. They warned that the current trajectory of tariffs and strained ties could push India closer to China and Russia.

They underlined that Washington must avoid clubbing India with Pakistan, noting that America’s long-term interests are far more aligned with New Delhi.

Proposing a new strategic framework, Sullivan and Campbell suggested a ten-year action plan for cooperation in advanced technologies including AI, semiconductors, biotech, quantum, clean energy, telecom, and aerospace, to ensure democracies retain their innovation edge over China.
