Thane, Sep 5: The body of a 19-year-old youth who fell into Vitawa creek near Kalwa while travelling in a suburban train was recovered on Friday afternoon, officials said.

The deceased has been identified as Akash Sharma, a resident of Gholai Nagar in Kalwa. He had slipped into the creek around 1 pm on Thursday while on his way from Mulund, according to Yasin Tadvi, chief of the Thane Municipal Corporation’s Disaster Management Cell.

Teams from the Thane Disaster Response Force (TDRF), assisted by local fishermen with two boats, launched a search operation that continued late into Thursday evening and resumed on Friday morning. Despite strong currents and high water flow hampering the operation, fishermen Prathamesh Kharkar, Jitu Kharkar, and Suresh Vitawkar located the body around 12:30 pm on Friday.

Police have registered a case of accidental death and are carrying out further investigations.
