Guntur, Sep 6: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday declared a health emergency in Turakapalem village of Guntur district after a mysterious illness claimed at least 20 lives in the last two months. High-level medical teams have been deployed to investigate the cause.

A team led by Director of Medical Education Dr Raghunandan has already begun a thorough probe. Preliminary reports suggest the illness could be Melioidosis, a bacterial infection caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, commonly found in soil and stagnant water during the monsoon season. Two confirmed cases have already been detected in the village.

Health officials said Melioidosis poses greater risks to individuals with pre-existing conditions such as diabetes. The government has ordered comprehensive health screening of all 2,500 residents, including tests for kidney function, blood sugar, and blood pressure.

Authorities noted a pattern in the fatalities, with most victims being men around 55 years old who also suffered from other health issues. The disease often starts with fever and cough but can quickly escalate to severe lung damage if not treated in time.

Naidu has directed officials to ensure safe drinking water supply in the village and asked health authorities to coordinate with AIIMS Mangalagiri and international experts if required.

The Chief Minister has assured that the government will take all necessary measures to contain the spread and provide timely treatment to the affected.
