Manoj Bajpayee warns against Box Office obsession, calls it ‘Bhasmasura’

Mumbai, Sept 11: Acclaimed actor Manoj Bajpayee has cautioned the film industry against its growing fixation with box office numbers, describing it as a “Bhasmasura” that could ultimately consume those who created it. His remarks come ahead of the release of his latest film Jugnuma, internationally known as The Fable, which is set to hit Indian theatres on September 12.

Speaking to a national daily, the Satya and Gangs of Wasseypur actor said, “It’s a monster created by commercial producers for their own game. Very soon, this monster is going to eat you up. You have created Bhasmasura… one day it will eat them up.”

Bajpayee argued that financial success cannot be equated with artistic merit, pointing out that smaller, independent films often struggle for space. He also expressed concern that the rise of mainstream content on OTT platforms has further sidelined meaningful cinema.

Citing examples from Amitabh Bachchan’s career, Bajpayee noted how the superstar balanced both artistic and commercial films, saying such choices gave him lasting stature. He stressed that if art is removed from cinema, it risks becoming nothing more than a product.
