Tehran, Sep 14: Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) announced on Sunday that the recently signed agreement between Tehran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to resume bilateral cooperation aligns fully with the council’s prior approval.
According to a statement, the SNSC’s nuclear committee thoroughly reviewed the arrangement’s text, confirming that the final signed document matches the committee’s approved terms. The nuclear committee, consisting of senior officials from relevant bodies, holds the authority to make decisions on behalf of the SNSC and followed standard procedures in this case.
The agreement was signed on Tuesday in Cairo by Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi and IAEA director general Rafael Grossi, marking the resumption of cooperation after months of tension sparked by Israeli and US attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities in June.
Following those strikes, Iran’s Parliament and Constitutional Council enacted legislation to suspend cooperation with the IAEA, demanding guarantees for the safety of its nuclear sites and personnel before allowing inspections to resume. Inspections now require SNSC approval.
The SNSC statement emphasized two key points regarding cooperation and security:
• Iran will submit reports to the IAEA only after ensuring necessary security and safety measures and securing SNSC approval.
• The operational framework for this cooperation must be mutually agreed upon, with any implementation contingent on SNSC confirmation.
Importantly, the SNSC warned that if any hostile actions are taken against Iran’s nuclear facilities—such as the reinstatement of previously terminated UN Security Council resolutions—the current cooperation arrangements will be immediately suspended.
This declaration underscores Iran’s cautious approach in balancing engagement with the IAEA while safeguarding its national security interests amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
