New Delhi, Sep 18: Businessman Samir Modi was arrested at a Delhi airport on Thursday after a Look-Out Circular (LOC) was issued by the city police. Modi, who had been abroad on a business trip to Europe, was taken into custody immediately upon arrival.
The arrest stems from a First Information Report (FIR) lodged last week at New Friends Colony Police Station, where a woman alleged that she had been in a long-term relationship with Modi since 2019 and has now levelled serious charges against him. Following the arrest, Modi—brother of Lalit Modi—was produced before a Delhi court and remanded to one day of police custody.

In response, Modi’s legal team issued a strongly worded statement, calling the allegations “false and fabricated,” and claiming that the complaint is part of an extortion attempt. According to the lawyer, Modi had filed two prior complaints—on August 8 and 13 this year—accusing the same woman of blackmail and demanding Rs 50 crore from him. These complaints were reportedly backed by WhatsApp conversations that allegedly support his claims.
The statement further slammed the arrest as “arbitrary” and “hasty,” pointing out that Modi had already cooperated with investigators before travelling abroad. “This is a clear abuse of legal provisions. He met with the investigating officer prior to his departure. Arresting him upon return without further inquiry shows complete disregard for due process,” the lawyer said.
Describing the FIR as baseless, the defence argued that the accusations relate to events spanning over four years, often in public or professional settings—details that, they say, contradict the nature of the charges. “Even by the complainant’s account, the alleged interactions occurred in public spaces, restaurants, offices, and homes. This alone casts serious doubt on the veracity and intention behind the complaint,” the statement read.
Modi, who is already involved in multiple ongoing business litigations, is portrayed by his legal team as a law-abiding entrepreneur with full confidence in India’s judicial process. “He is a respected businessman with complete faith in the system, and he believes the truth will come out. This matter will be resolved swiftly once the facts are properly examined,” the statement concluded.
The case is expected to develop further in the coming days as both sides prepare to present additional evidence and legal arguments.
