UK deports Indian National to France under new migrant treaty

London, Sep 19: An Indian national has become the first migrant to be deported from the United Kingdom to France under a new returns treaty aimed at curbing illegal Channel crossings.

Britain’s Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood termed the deportation an “important first step” in the campaign against illegal migration, warning that those entering the UK unlawfully would be removed.

The deportation comes under a year-long “one in, one out” scheme signed between the UK and France in August, under which migrants deemed ineligible for asylum will be sent back, while Britain will accept an equal number of legal migrants from France. The agreement runs until June 2026.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the first deportation proves the new partnership can work and stressed the need to increase removals in the coming months.
