Third annual Monthi Fest celebration unites Konkani community in Netherlands

Media Release

Netherlands, Sep 22: The Konkani-speaking Mangalurean and Goan community in the Netherlands gathered for the third consecutive year to celebrate Monthi Fest, the Nativity of Mother Mary, at St John the Baptist Church, Hoofddorp.

The celebration began with the traditional flower showering to Maria Bambina, led by Fr Richard Lobo SVD followed by a Konkani Mass filled with hymns like Moriyek Hogolsiyan and Sakkad Sangatha Melyan. Children played a special role in the rituals, receiving blessings and sugar cane, just as in Mangaluru.

In his sermon, Fr Lobo highlighted the values of family, community, and care for nature, resonating with the diverse congregation.

After Mass, the community shared a traditional vegetarian meal, followed by cultural performances, games, Baila dancing, and DJ music, creating a lively, family-friendly atmosphere. New families were warmly welcomed, strengthening the community’s bonds.

The event, coordinated by Oscar Rodrigues with support from volunteers and DJ Lavita, reflected the diaspora’s determination to preserve their heritage while embracing life in the Netherlands. Organizers expressed gratitude to the church, participants, and volunteers, and announced plans for an even grander celebration next year.
