Kasargod, Feb 10: Following the law and order disturbances in sand mining areas, near here, District Commissioner (DC) V N Jitendran issued prohibitory orders under CRPC Section 144 on Thursday February 9, to regulate recklessness of all those involved in sand mining activities.

The prohibitory orders were clamped on Mundakai in Muliyar, Chimenia in Kayyur, Potavoor and Cheroor in Chengala, near here.  The orders were issued by DC Jitendran after convening a meeting with gram panchayat secretaries, with a view to conserve the river banks from excessive sand mining and to regulate sand sale by gram panchayat officials. 

The identity cards were made compulsory for the labourers engaged in sand mining at river points.  The gram panchayat secretary was entrusted with the task of keeping a daily record of deliveries of sand loaded trucks and carry out frequent checks.  The orders were revoked for the ban issued earlier on sand mining areas in the areas under Paivalike, Puttige, Minja, and Chemnad gram panchayats. 

“The sand mining is open from 8.00 am to 4.00 pm only. Stringent action will be taken against those who engage in sand mining after the stipulated time. Sand mining using heavy earthmovers is banned.  Every truck load of sand should have a pass issued by the gram panchayat secretary.  Action will be taken against those who transport sand without proper papers.  These actions are being taken in order to curb chaos in sand mining and to maintain the law and order situation,” informed the DC.
