Panaji, Sep 27: Porvorim police registered a non-cognisable offence against former BJP district president Mahanand Asnodkar on Thursday night for allegedly threatening social activist Swapnesh Sherlekar over the phone.

Reports stated that Sherlekar had posted comments on social media about BJP leaders while urging the government to support the proposed Tiger Reserve in Goa. After viewing the post, Asnodkar allegedly called Sherlekar, abused him, and labeled him a “traitor.” An audio clip of the call quickly went viral on social media.

Following the incident, Sherlekar, accompanied by colleagues, filed a complaint at the Porvorim police station. On Friday, police summoned both Sherlekar and Asnodkar, advising them to maintain proper conduct.

The incident drew sharp criticism from across the State. Goa Forward Party President Vijai Sardesai demanded the immediate arrest of Asnodkar, citing the recent attack on activist Rama Kankonkar. Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao urged police protection for Sherlekar. Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira accused the BJP of promoting ‘goonda raj’ in Goa and condemned the intimidation of activists, calling it an attempt to silence dissenting voices.
