Mirzapur, Oct 2: Legendary classical vocalist and Padma Vibhushan awardee Pandit Chhannulal Mishra passed away in the early hours of Thursday at his daughter’s home in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh. He was 89 years old.
Family sources confirmed that Mishra breathed his last around 4 a.m. after a prolonged illness. His health had worsened late Wednesday night, prompting admission to a hospital, where he ultimately passed away. The maestro had been residing with his youngest daughter’s family in Mirzapur for some time.

Pandit Chhannulal Mishra is survived by three daughters and a son. His wife passed away four years ago.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss, praising Mishra for his invaluable contribution to promoting Indian classical music globally. In a condolence message on X, the Prime Minister recalled his personal association with the maestro, noting that Mishra had been one of the proposers for his candidature from the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat in 2014. Modi added that he considered himself fortunate to have received Mishra’s affection and blessings.
