Suwaiq water contamination claims two lives; Oman bans Iranian bottled water

Daijiworld Media Network - Muscat

Muscat, Oct 2: A tragic incident of water contamination in Suwaiq, Oman, has claimed the lives of two individuals — an Omani citizen and an expatriate woman — leading authorities to impose a nationwide ban on Iranian bottled water imports.

According to the Royal Oman Police (ROP), the expatriate woman died on September 29, while the Omani man passed away on October 1 after being hospitalised in critical condition. Both victims had reportedly consumed bottled water of the Iranian brand ‘Uranus Star’. An Omani woman from the same family also fell ill but has since recovered after receiving treatment.

The Food Safety and Quality Center (FSQC) confirmed that samples of the suspect bottled water were collected and tested, revealing contamination. Following these findings, all ‘Uranus Star’ products were immediately withdrawn from markets across Oman, and authorities suspended all bottled water imports from Iran as a precautionary measure.

In an official statement, the ROP urged residents to avoid consuming the Uranus Star brand and report any suspected contaminated water products. The ban on Iranian bottled water and the product recall will remain in place as investigations continue.

Authorities have assured the public that further steps will be taken to ensure consumer safety and prevent similar incidents in the future.
