Maoists kill villager in Bastar, renewing fears amid rising civilian targeting

Raipur, Oct 2: A chilling reminder of the volatile situation in Chhattisgarh's Bastar region emerged on the night of October 1, as Maoist insurgents brutally killed a local villager, accusing him of being a police informer.

The victim, identified as Madkam Bhima, belonged to Pujarikanker village under Usur Police Station in Bijapur district, a region long plagued by extremist violence.

According to police sources, a group of armed Maoists stormed Bhima’s home around 9:00 p.m. Eyewitnesses say the insurgents forcefully dragged him out, accused him of collaborating with security forces, and then attacked him with a sharp weapon in front of fellow villagers. The assault resulted in fatal injuries, leaving the community stunned and fearful.

Authorities were alerted soon after the incident. A police team was dispatched to the village, and after confirming the killing, an FIR was registered under applicable sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

“This was a barbaric and deliberate act meant to create fear,” stated a senior Bijapur police official. “There is a longstanding pattern of Maoists targeting innocent civilians under false suspicions. We will pursue every legal avenue to bring the perpetrators to justice.”

The incident has reignited concerns over the increasing vulnerability of civilians in insurgency-hit areas, where individuals are frequently caught in the dangerous crossfire between Maoist violence and state counter-insurgency efforts. Allegations of being a police informer are often used by Maoists as justification for such attacks, with little or no proof presented.

Locals mourned the loss of Bhima, describing him as a soft-spoken, hardworking man with no political connections. His death has sparked outrage in the community and renewed calls for better protection and accountability.

In response to the killing, security forces have ramped up patrolling in the region, and efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend the attackers.

This tragic event adds to the growing toll of civilian lives lost in Maoist-dominated areas and underscores the pressing need for stronger community outreach, intelligence-led policing, and sustainable development to undermine extremist influence and ensure the safety of innocent residents.
