PM Modi slams TMC over attack on BJP MP, calls out West Bengal’s law and order breakdown

New Delhi, Oct 6: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has strongly condemned the violent attack on BJP MP Khagen Murmu and other party workers in West Bengal, calling it a disturbing reflection of the Trinamool Congress’ insensitivity and the state's deteriorating law and order situation. Taking to social media platform X, PM Modi described the assault as "appalling," especially as the BJP leaders were engaged in relief work for people affected by floods and landslides.

“The manner in which our Party colleagues, including a sitting MP and MLA, were attacked in West Bengal for serving the people... is outright appalling,” the Prime Minister wrote. He criticised the ruling TMC for allegedly prioritising political violence over public welfare during a time of crisis and urged BJP workers to persist in helping those in need through rescue and relief efforts.

Echoing the PM’s sentiment, BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya accused the TMC of running a “Jungle Raj” in the state. He detailed that Khagen Murmu, a prominent tribal leader and two-time MP from North Malda, was targeted while en route to Nagrakata in Jalpaiguri’s Dooars region to assist in flood-hit areas. Malviya also hit out at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of ignoring the crisis while participating in a Kolkata cultural event.

The attack, which allegedly involved TMC supporters, took place in Bamandanga, where Murmu’s vehicle was pelted with stones and assaulted with rods. According to BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh, who was accompanying Murmu, the MP suffered a head injury that resulted in heavy bleeding, and their vehicle was severely damaged.

The incident sparked widespread outrage within the BJP. In Kolkata, party workers held a protest rally from their state headquarters to College Square, burning an effigy of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and demanding strict action against those responsible. The demonstration was led by North Kolkata BJP leader Tamoghna Ghosh, who said the attack was a disgrace to democracy and demanded accountability from the state government.

Protests also included a sit-in demonstration and roadblocks with burning tyres, as BJP supporters carried photographs of the injured MP and condemned the TMC for allegedly orchestrating the violence.

As the political battle intensifies in the wake of natural disaster, the BJP has framed the attack as part of a broader narrative of lawlessness under TMC rule, setting the stage for further confrontations in West Bengal’s volatile political landscape.
