Attempted attack on CJI Gavai sparks nationwide outrage

New Delhi, Oct 6: A shocking security breach inside the Supreme Court on Monday, where a lawyer attempted to throw a shoe at Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai, has triggered widespread condemnation from political leaders and legal institutions alike. The act, seen as more than just an attack on an individual, has been widely decried as an affront to the judiciary and the Constitution.

Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi called the incident “an assault not just on him, but on our Constitution as well,” and urged the nation to stand united with “anguish and outrage” in support of the Chief Justice. Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, echoed the sentiment, saying the attack undermined the “dignity of our judiciary and the spirit of our Constitution,” and warned that such hate-fueled acts must be condemned unequivocally.

The incident occurred during court proceedings, when the advocate—identified as Rakesh Kishore—hurled a shoe in the direction of the CJI-led bench while shouting slogans referencing Sanatan Dharma. He was swiftly restrained and removed by security personnel. Reports suggest his outburst was in reaction to CJI Gavai’s earlier remarks in a case concerning the restoration of a Vishnu idol in Khajuraho. The Chief Justice later issued a clarification stating, “I respect all religions,” after his comments were misrepresented on social media.

In response, the Bar Council of India (BCI) took immediate action, suspending Kishore for violating the professional code of conduct and tarnishing the dignity of the court. The BCI directed the Delhi Bar Council to update Kishore’s suspension status and alert all relevant courts and tribunals.

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) expressed “profound shock and unequivocal condemnation” and is reportedly considering additional disciplinary measures. Similarly, the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA) urged the top court to take suo motu cognisance and initiate contempt proceedings.

As political leaders, legal bodies, and the public stand in solidarity with the CJI, the incident has renewed calls for heightened courtroom security and greater respect for judicial institutions—highlighting that attacks on the judiciary will be met with resolute institutional and national backlash.
