NHAI to roll out QR code signboards on highways to aid commuters with key details

New Delhi, Oct 7: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to introduce QR code-enabled signboards across the country’s national highways, giving commuters quick access to crucial information while travelling.

The initiative, announced by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), is aimed at improving road safety, transparency, and ease of commuting.

According to the release, the vertical signboards will display important project details such as the highway number, project length, chainage, and construction/maintenance timelines. By scanning the QR codes, commuters can access emergency helplines, including 1033, as well as contact information of highway patrol, toll managers, project managers, resident engineers, and NHAI field offices.

The facility will also digitally connect travellers to nearby emergency and utility services such as hospitals, petrol pumps, toilets, police stations, restaurants, vehicle repair shops, truck lay-byes, toll plazas, and EV charging stations.

For maximum visibility, the signboards will be strategically installed at toll plazas, rest areas, wayside amenities, truck lay-byes, and at the start and end points of highway stretches.

“Apart from giving project-specific details and improving transparency, the QR code signboards will strengthen road safety through better access to emergency and local services while significantly improving commuter convenience and awareness about national highways,” the ministry stated.

Officials further added that this step is part of NHAI’s ongoing efforts to make highway travel in India more convenient, transparent, and digitally connected for millions of road users.
