Udupi, Oct 9: A new medium-sized barge named ‘Kaveri’, constructed at a cost of Rs 2.05 crore to connect Kodi Bengre and Hangarakatte via river route, was inaugurated by Karnataka minister for fisheries, ports and inland water transport, Mankal S Vaidya, at the Hangarakatte port.

Speaking after the inauguration, minister Vaidya said that the new barge service will greatly benefit the residents of Kodi Bengre—an island-like village—and also provide convenience to tourists visiting the area. The barge will help reduce travel time considerably, as people earlier had to take a long detour by road, he noted.

He further assured that in the coming days, steps will be taken to construct a bridge to provide better connectivity and convenience to local residents.

Highlighting development plans for Hangarakatte port, the minister said that efforts will be made to promote fishing-related activities and overall port development, along with dredging works to improve navigability.

He added that the construction of a new shed at the port is underway at a cost of Rs 50 lac, and the government will extend full support to upgrade and enhance its facilities.

Mentioning social progress in the region, minister Vaidya appreciated the local community’s efforts in making Kodi Bengre a tobacco-free village and encouraged them to continue promoting a healthy, addiction-free lifestyle.
