Ramallah, Oct 9: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has welcomed the announcement by US President Donald Trump regarding a ceasefire agreement in Gaza, expressing hope that it could mark the beginning of a lasting political resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In a statement released through Palestine’s Mission to the United Nations, Abbas extended gratitude to Trump and other international mediators for facilitating the agreement, while reiterating Palestine’s commitment to working with global partners to ensure its successful implementation.

The ceasefire, announced by Trump on his social media platform Truth Social, reportedly includes provisions for halting military operations in Gaza, the withdrawal of Israeli forces, the entry of humanitarian aid, and a framework for a prisoner exchange. Trump described the development as a “great day” for the Arab and Muslim world, Israel, surrounding nations, and the United States, acknowledging the roles of Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey in mediating the deal. He further claimed that both Israel and Hamas had agreed to the “first phase” of what he called a broader peace plan aimed at achieving lasting stability in the region.

President Abbas emphasized the importance of swift and full implementation of the agreement, calling for the immediate release of all hostages and prisoners, uninterrupted humanitarian access via UN agencies, a halt to any displacement or annexation efforts, and the urgent commencement of Gaza’s reconstruction. He underscored that the sovereignty over Gaza rests solely with the State of Palestine and called for the restoration of administrative and legal unity between the West Bank and Gaza under a single Palestinian governance structure supported by Arab and international partners.

Abbas reiterated that any political roadmap must lead to the end of Israeli occupation and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with international law. His statement signals cautious optimism as diplomatic momentum appears to return to a long-stalled peace process, following months of devastating conflict and humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
