Iraq condemns US sanctions as harmful to bilateral ties, calls for dialogue over unilateral moves

Baghdad, Oct 12: The Iraqi government has strongly objected to the latest round of U.S. Treasury sanctions targeting Iraqi entities, labeling the move as a "deeply regrettable" and unilateral action that undermines the principles of mutual respect and cooperation between the two nations.

In an official statement, government spokesperson Basim al-Awadi criticized Washington’s decision to impose sanctions without prior consultation, calling it a troubling departure from established norms between allied countries. The sanctions were justified by U.S. authorities on the grounds that the targeted entities allegedly supported Iranian efforts to evade sanctions, smuggled weapons, and engaged in systemic corruption within Iraq.

“These measures were taken without any coordination or dialogue with the Iraqi government,” al-Awadi noted, describing it as a harmful precedent in managing international partnerships. The statement emphasized that the Iraqi government remains committed to the rule of law and its obligations under international treaties and agreements.

Calling for a more cooperative approach, Baghdad urged the United States and other partners to prioritize transparency, joint technical cooperation, and the exchange of information over punitive actions. The government stressed the importance of resolving concerns through institutional channels rather than through what it sees as unilateral impositions.

In response to the developments, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani has ordered the creation of a high-level national committee to examine the situation. The committee has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive review and submitting a report within 30 days, outlining appropriate legal and administrative responses to the sanctions.
