San Francisco, Oct 14: OpenAI and Broadcom on Monday announced a multi-year strategic partnership to jointly design and develop chips and systems aimed at meeting the world’s growing artificial intelligence (AI) compute demands. Under the collaboration, the companies will develop 10 gigawatts of custom AI accelerators, with OpenAI designing the chipsets and Broadcom handling fabrication and deployment. Broadcom will also provide Ethernet solutions to scale the AI systems.
This marks OpenAI’s second foray into hardware after its under-development AI device being built with Jony Ive. By designing its own chips and systems, OpenAI aims to optimize performance for workloads generated by large language models (LLMs) and products such as ChatGPT and Sora, while deploying these systems across company facilities and partner data centers.

“Partnering with Broadcom is a critical step in building the infrastructure needed to unlock AI's potential and deliver real benefits for people and businesses. Developing our own accelerators adds to the broader ecosystem of partners, all building the capacity required to push the frontier of AI to provide benefits to all humanity,” said Sam Altman, Co-Founder and CEO of OpenAI.
Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. Broadcom will have exclusive rights for racks and Ethernet solutions for the chips. This partnership is OpenAI’s fourth to scale AI compute, alongside collaborations with Oracle, Nvidia, and AMD.
OpenAI reported that ChatGPT now has more than 800 million weekly active users, with growing adoption across enterprises, small businesses, and developers—driving a surge in server requirements.
