Ayarkunnam, Oct 19: Police have arrested Soni SK (31), a native of Dharapara in Murshidabad district, West Bengal, for allegedly murdering his wife and burying her body near an under-construction house in Ayarkunnam.

Soni, employed as a construction labourer in Ayarkunnam, was apprehended at a railway station in Ernakulam while allegedly attempting to flee to his hometown with his two children. The deceased has been identified as Alpana Khathoon (28), also from Murshidabad.

According to police, Soni had filed a missing person complaint on October 17, claiming his wife had disappeared three days earlier. He stated that Khathoon had accompanied him to the market on October 14 morning but was not at home when he returned in the evening. Authorities grew suspicious due to the delayed reporting and absence of any CCTV evidence showing the woman.

During interrogation, Soni reportedly confessed to strangling Khathoon and hitting her on the head with an iron rod at the construction site on the morning of October 14. He then buried her body near the workplace, allegedly acting on suspicion that she was involved in an extramarital affair.

Police recovered the body at the site following Soni’s confession. After completing procedures at the crime scene, he was formally arrested and will be produced in court as part of the remand process.

The case has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting domestic violence and crime in the area.
