Rotary leads polio awareness rally in Tripura, urges collective action

Agartala, Oct 25: A rally to spread awareness on polio eradication was held in Agartala on Friday, beginning from Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan and concluding at the Ujjayanta Palace, covering major routes across the city.

The event was flagged off by Justice Arindam Lodh, Chairperson of the Tripura Human Rights Commission, along with Rotarians Kishalay Ghosh and Dr. Sanjay Kundu, Advocate Sanjay Pal, Subal Dey, Chairman of Syandan Patrika, and Rotarian Pranab Sarkar, Chairman of Headlines National, among other dignitaries.

Over 212 participants, including students from HFT Institute of Nursing Science, GT Institute of Paramedical Science, Edufeedus Group of Institutions, Tripura Nursing College, and healthcare workers from Teresa Diagnostic Center, took part enthusiastically, carrying the message of a polio-free world.

Speaking to reporters, a Rotary representative highlighted the organisation’s pivotal role in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI). “Since launching its Polio Plus program in 1985, Rotary International has contributed over $2.1 billion and helped reduce global polio cases by more than 99 percent,” he said.

He further stressed the importance of community participation and collaboration with WHO, UNICEF, and governments to ensure vaccines reach every child, especially in remote and vulnerable areas.

The rally concluded with a candle-lighting ceremony, symbolising renewed commitment toward a polio-free world, reaffirming Rotary’s enduring dedication to global health and humanitarian service.
