Veteran actor-singer Sulakshana Pandit passes away at 71

Mumbai, Nov 7: Veteran actor and playback singer Sulakshana Pandit, remembered for her roles in classic films like Uljhan and Chehre Pe Chehra, passed away on Thursday evening following a cardiac arrest. She was 71.

Her brother, music composer Lalit Pandit, confirmed the news, saying, “She passed away due to cardiac arrest around 7 pm. She had complained of breathlessness and seemed a bit unwell. We were taking her to Nanavati Hospital, but she died before we could reach.”

Born into a renowned musical family from Hisar, Haryana, Sulakshana was the niece of the legendary Pandit Jasraj and sister to noted music composers Jatin-Lalit and actress Vijayata Pandit. She began singing at the tender age of nine, performing alongside her brother Mandheer, before making her mark in both cinema and playback singing.

Sulakshana made her acting debut opposite Sanjeev Kumar in Uljhan (1975) and went on to share the screen with leading stars of her era including Rajesh Khanna, Shashi Kapoor, and Vinod Khanna. Her memorable films include Sankoch, Hera Pheri, Khandaan, and Dharam Kanta.

As a playback singer, she lent her melodious voice to several timeless hits such as Tu Hi Saagar Tu Hi Kinara, Pardesiya Tere Desh Mein, Bekarar Dil Tut Gaya, Baandhi Re Kahe Preet, and Somvaar Ko Hum Mile.

Fans and colleagues from the film and music industry have expressed deep sorrow over her passing, remembering her as a multi-talented artist whose contributions to Indian cinema and music will be cherished forever.
