New Delhi, Nov 10: At least eight people lost their lives and 11 others were injured after a powerful explosion ripped through a crowded area near the historic Red Fort in New Delhi on Monday evening.

According to Delhi Police, the blast occurred in a car parked near the Red Fort Metro Station in the densely populated Chandni Chowk area. Police spokesperson Sanjay Tyagi said the cause of the explosion is yet to be determined and a detailed investigation is underway.

The explosion triggered a massive fire, engulfing at least six vehicles and three autorickshaws parked nearby. Firefighting teams rushed to the spot and managed to bring the flames under control after an hour-long operation, said Delhi’s deputy fire chief.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos following the blast. “We heard a loud sound and our windows shook. When we stepped out, smoke was everywhere,” said a local resident to NDTV.

Police teams, along with sniffer dogs and forensic experts, have cordoned off the area and launched a thorough inspection. Crowds gathered around the site were dispersed as emergency personnel carried out rescue and recovery operations.

The Red Fort, also known as Lal Qila, is a 17th-century Mughal-era monument and one of India’s most iconic landmarks. It attracts thousands of tourists daily and holds national importance as the site from where the prime minister delivers the Independence Day address every year.

Authorities have tightened security across the capital, with all metro stations and key public areas placed on high alert as the investigation continues.
